Quick Take: Billy Porter In a “Pose” Both Daring and Classic

Debbie says:

By many accounts, Pose is one of the most interesting shows on TV right now. I don’t get FX, so I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve been jonesing for it for some time. A show about young people in the Bronx in the late 1980s, many of them trans, with Janet Mock as a core writer: irresistible. Wesley Morris and Jenna Wortham got me excited when they called it “post-curious,” as in featuring trans people without the everpresent naive “curious” questions.

But this post is not about Pose. It’s about Billy Carter, one of the stars in Pose, who appeared in this outfit at the Critics’ Choice Awards:

Tom + Lorenzo, two really smart (and smart-ass) fashion bloggers, don’t especially like Porter’s outfit, which was designed by young designer Rinat Brodach:

Do we love a brown satin jumpsuit with a huge orange bow? Oh, HELL no. Not even if Tilda Swinton, Lupita Nyong’o and Cate Blanchett all came out sporting them in some sort of display of style-based solidarity.

But they spotted something that I would have missed, which is this comparison:

Thomas Gainsborough's The Blue Boy

And then they draw the perfect conclusion:

Not only is [Porter] riding the rainbow with his fashion choices, but he’s demanding a seat on a long continuum of western dandyism and peacocking that goes back centuries. We may not love this jumpsuit, but we respect the fuck out of it.

From Gainsborough’s Blue Boy to the 2019 Critics Choice Award is quite a journey. I’m delighted that Porter and Rinat did it, that Tom and Lorenzo noticed it, and that Marcia pointed it out to me.
