Portals Talk

Laurie says:

June 17 til August 12,  2023 is the exhibition both at the gallery (Arc Gallery, San Francisco) and on the web.

Everyone will be talking about their work in the exhibition. I will be discussing my portrait of Hiroko Hagiwara from my Women of Japan project. The project was done over 6 years in collaboration with Japanese feminists. Please click on images for best  quality.

Women of Japan is Edison’s work. It is she who took photographs and selected one or two shots to print and exhibit. But it is the models each decided to pose for the photographer. They too created Women of Japan by speaking their own words about photographs they are in. The photographer and the models are not simply creator and objects. But both are, though in different ways, participants in the creation of the work. This explains the unique glow emitted from Laurie Toby Edison’s Women of Japan.

Laurie says:

I’m really pleased to have my portrait of Hiroko Hagiwara from my Women of Japan project in the “Portals” on-line exhibition.

Portals can be openings into new realities, liminal gateways to otherworldly realms, or doorways for the world of matter to commune with spirit. A portal might signify personal growth, self-actualization, or transcendence. This exhibition features artwork from 92 members of Northern California’s Women’s Caucus for Art that tells a story, invites the viewer into other realms, evokes transcendence, or inspires a good laugh. It was juried by Karen Gutfreund, a prominent feminist critic, artist and curator.

Arc Gallery & Studios is hosting the in-person portion of Portals, a juried, NCWCA Member exhibition. The in-person exhibition features 21 artworks that represent the collection as a whole. All 92 artworks will be exhibited in the Portals Online Gallery and in the Portals exhibition catalog.

The
opening Reception is Saturday, 06/17/23, 7-9pm, at the Arc Gallery, 1246 Folsom Street, San Francisco. The gallery is open 1-6PM on Wednesdays & Thursdays and 12-3PM on Saturdays. Viewing by appointment is also available.

I’m also in an online artist’s conversation about the exhibition on Thurs, 08/03/22, from 7-8pm. It features artists Sandra Yagi, Carol Newborg, Linah Sofi, Cecile J Picard, Lorraine Bonner, Sandra Wolfson, Miriam Fabbri, Janna Waldinger, Suzanne Perkins, Nilou Farzam, Salma Arastu and me.
Join the zoom talk at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83505103913?pwd=OGR0dVZUU1VLTmtEblNSTGQ0a2xzUT09. I’ll also post about the talk when it happens.

It’s a special show to be in. I’ll post catalogue information when I have it.
