Pandemic Shadows: Solstice 2021

..

Laurie says:

I’ve been doing my Pandemic Shadows project for quite a while now, and I was hoping to get a solstice image. What I didn’t expect was a photo that would only happen on high solar noon today. It needed to be focused, however briefly, in a narrow space between a wall and a red tent in my garden. I was shocked and delighted when I saw it. It took me a number of fast shots to get one that worked superbly for me as art.

This is a photo of the bamboo that is next to the tent. Bamboo behind it is usually invisible except for the solstice shadows today.
..

Have a good solstice and hopefully a better year!

Pandemic Reflections

Laurie says:

I was tempted to call this post reflection on reflections, but fortunately refrained. I’ve been taking some photos of pandemic reflections that I am very happy with. Reflections are a different kind of shadow but they are still shadows. Shadows of things that exist but usually are not seen in the image, as much is not seen or hidden right now.

And for me it’s part of a reflection on what this year has been so far. It feels to me like all the shadow photos together tell a story of aspects of this time.

..

This photo was taken at Heron Park, and, unusually, it does show what is reflected.

This photo and the ones that follow were taken in a park in Sonoma that is a dry lake bed. It’s flat and has (something rare for this part of the world), an open sky. The open sky made me really happy. It’s something I miss in Northern California and it reminded me of how much I love an open sky.
..

The contrast in taking photos of the delicate reflections in the mud under that sky was inspiring.
