Knowing the names of the dead matter. Naming the dead matters. I was at a demonstration today in front of City Hall that continues the protests of the hunger strikers “The Frisco Five“. They were fasting to protest the murders by the police of Alex Nieto, Luis Gongora, Mario Woods and Amilcar Perez Lopez.

Many names of  murdered people of color were written in chalk on the sidewalk in front of City Hall where the people were demonstrating. I took the photos when I found spaces that were free of people’s feet.

There are so many names. The first one I learned as a child was Emmett Till and I have been learning names ever since.   Many things have changed since I was a girl. This has not.
