Krispy Kreme Attacked for “Choice”

Laurie says:

In these brief closing days of George Bush’s America, the American Life League has brought us yet another truly surreal yet horrifying moment.

The American Life League (apparently one of the largest Catholic pro-life organizations in the US) has denounced Krispy Kreme donuts because of this sweet Inauguration Day press release

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American’s sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies — just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet ‘free’ can be.

The American Life League’s immediate and fierce response:

“The unfortunate reality of a post-Roe v. Wade America is that ‘choice’ is synonymous with abortion access, and celebration of ‘freedom of choice’ is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand,” the group’s president, Judie Brown said in a statement...

“Just an unfortunate choice of words? (referring to the Krispy Kreme press release)  For the sake of our Wednesday morning doughnut runs, we hope so. The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America is that ‘choice’ is synonymous with abortion access, and celebration of ‘freedom of choice’ is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand.”

I never knew choosing dessert was such a passionate political choice. It’s enough to make me want to line up on Tuesday in front of my local Krispy Kreme, for a doughnut of my choice.  I’m not a big doughnut fan, but for the sake of my principles I’ll eat one.  Anyone care to join me?

I saw this on Empowerment for Women.

  1. If we had Krispy Kreme in Bangor, Maine, I would be there with bells on. I am constantly amazed, even as I tell myself nothing can shock me anymore, at the incredible heights of stupidity people can attain.

  2. Krispy Kreme and abortion? In my wildest imagination, I don’t think I could have made that leap. Just goes to show how rabidly defensive this group is, I suppose. I’m not a doughnut fan either and I don’t think we have all that many Krispy Kreme locations around here, but I’d gladly join you if we did.

  3. Thanks for this!

You didn’t mention that Bush also declared yesterday National Sanctity of Human Life Day. Since yesterday was my deceased mother’s birthday, I am especially affronted by this.

How dare he! Two days before he falls into the cesspit of history.

Yeah, real hypocritical coming from the governor of the state with the highest death penalty killings in the nation and from a commander-in-chief who waged an unjust war in which countless numbers of civilians and soldiers were slaughtered.

  5. The closest Krispy Kreme from me is 100 miles north, otherwise I would be in claiming my doughnut.

I don’t know what it is about doughnuts that seem to drive the wacko right insane, but I for one love them and will continue to exercise my freedom of choice between chocolate glazed and chocolate bismarks :D.
