Thanksgiving 2006

Laurie and Debbie say:

For our second year doing this blog, we’d like to take the occasion of the American Thanksgiving holiday to list some things in the world to be thankful for.

So much in the world is disturbing, disgusting, and infuriating; that’s why it’s important to spend a moment looking at what’s worth being thankful for. Here’s our second random, off-the-top-of-our-heads list. Please help us add to it.

The Democrats won a very significant victory earlier this month and so far, at least, they seem to be showing some spine.
O.J. Simpson’s If I Did It book will not be published.
The courts upheld the “roadless rule” protecting the U.S. the national forests from the Bush administration.
Gay marriage will be legal in South Africa starting on January 1, 2007.
Sweden expects to have zero dependence on oil in ten years.
The infant mortality rates in southern Africa have gone down for two years running.
Arizona voted down a ban on gay marriage (the first time a U.S. state has rejected such a ban); and South Dakota voted down a draconian abortion ban.
The Nobel Peace Prize went to Mohammed Yunus and his Grameen Bank for microloans to third-world people.
Scientists are studying the Neanderthal genome and early signs indicate that human beings may have bred with Neanderthals.
Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Tom DeLay was indicted and lobbyist Jack Abramoff was convicted and sentenced to 70 months in jail.
A revolutionary New York City rule will allowing people to change their official gender without requiring medical intervention.
For the first time, the United States has a woman in the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Boulder, Colorado, has approved the first carbon tax in the U.S. What’s more, using the Expedia site, any traveler can now buy inexpensive carbon credits which are then retired, and therefore offset the environmental consequences of their plane fare. (Debbie did this in October for $16.)
The Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, are still investigating the planet’s surface more than nine months after they were expected to stop working.

Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy lots of fabulous food! We’ll be back next Tuesday.
