Oh So Pretty

Debbie says:

If you read one post on a fashion blog this year, this is the one to read.

Now, this may seem strange from someone who writes about pretty dresses (mostly) every day, but: You Don’t Have to Be Pretty. You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked “female”.

I don’t have anything to add; I just would be proud to have written it.

  1. As a person who was not born with the gift of socially-sanctioned beauty, I really appreciate this post. I find it brilliant & amazing, coming from someone who is obviously quite involved with fashion & appearance. My daily appearance IS clean, dressed, & out of bed & that is good enough. I don’t need to be asked to model for anyone or be declared “pretty” (though I have been told that occasionally over the years) in order to special, worthwhile, & beautiful in my own way. I wish we could all truly believe this about ourselves & stop wasting so much time, energy, & money trying to be what we are not & competing with each other.
