Woman + Body: Korean Feminist Artists

Laurie says:

I posted earlier about the international exhibition in Korea that included my work, Woman + Body curated by scholar and artist Hye-Seong Tak Lee .  The show included the work of US and Korean feminist artists and was sponsored by the Women’s Caucus of the Arts.  The exhibition was at Kepco Plaza Gallery Museum in Seoul and then went on to the Gwangju Cultural Foundation’s MediaCube 338 in Gwangju.  There is a beautiful video and photographs from the exhibition here.

The people who ran the show were thrilled that I donated work for their opening night raffle. The opening night was crowded and very successful.

In this post I want to put up some of the work of the Korean feminist artists who were in the Woman + Body. There are many truly stunning works of art in the exhibition.  I had a hard time making these choices.

Artist Priscilla Otani, the president of the Women’s Caucus of the Arts, was at the exhibition in Gwangju. . I asked her to email me (she is currently in Japan) about the Korean artists who were in the exhibition.

The Korean women artists consist of two groups: the older artist’s who are well-established feminist artists such as Yun Suknam and Park Youngsook. The other group are young women artists, whose works were curated by Hye-Seong. Her desire, and the first gen feminists’ were to nurture growth of the next gen of feminist artists. By bringing this group together, Hye-Seong created an interesting synergy, particularly in social settings after the opening reception. A group of the young and old went out for dinner and stayed in a traditional Korean rental home. Next day a group of us toured parts of Gwangju. It is hoped this is the beginning of future collaborations between the older and younger generations.

So the exhibition worked on many  levels including  an international collaboration and  a synergy within the 2 generations of Korean women’s artist community.

This gave me an additional reason to be honored to have been in Woman + Body. It also increases my desire to go to Korea.
