The Male Gaze, Fashion Photography, and the Pose

Thomas Streeter, Nicole Hintlian, Samantha Chipetz, and Susanna Callender, working with the Semiotics Project of the University of Vermont, have done an excellent “web essay on the male gaze, fashion advertising, and the pose.”

We suggest taking your time with this excellent overview of how women are depicted in the media, both currently and historically, with comparison photographs that make strong visual points.

  1. Major thanks Debbie and Laurie and also to Lori Selke for this link. It was interesting in itself but it linked to a book I had not heard of, but now know I have to read–Beyond Women and Desire, by Polly Young-Eisendrath. The PW review says: “[Young-Eisendrath] argues that most women don’t have a clue about what they want because society has programmed them simply to want to present a desirable image.”
